European bisons arrive!
Auroxen arrive to grasslands at Lake Pape!

Photo story about arrival of 23 Auroxen to the grasslands at Lake Pape.

European bison

The European bison (Bison bonasus) once roamed the great temperate, deciduous forest biome that stretched from the British Isles, through most of Europe and into Siberia (PHVA, 1999). Though, time has taken its toll on the once continuous distribution of bison, which now exist in few isolated areas. Today - Roughly 3,200 animals of the bison exist (PHVA, 1999).

Large Carnivore

Latvia is one of the few European countries hosting a strong population of large carnivores. There are about 300-400 wolves, about the same number of lynxes and about 10 bears.

Wild horses

Wild horses were a common part of European nature before farming was developed. In 1936 Polish professor Vitelani started reflexive selection of domestic horses that were mostly like wild ones. As a result of domestic horse took a turn for a wild one through several generations. It was named “Konik Polski” – Polish horse.
